A Nation Against all Odds 3: 2007

From the conclusion of the 1970 Suez Canal War up until the 1973 Yom Kippur War, there were numerous false alarms by the Egyptian PM Anwar Sadat by staging a few large scale military exercises, only to drawl back the army when the Israeli IDF was in heightened battle alert which was designed to shake the morals and to cover the fighting preparedness of the Israelite with deceit of complacencies so as to enable arab countries to launch a surprise attack.

With the Egyptian forces was Syria and nine other countries supporting the war. Prior to the war a few months before it, Iraqi became the chief supplier of military arms to Egyptian forces with a squadron of Hunter jet fighters. Nearing the onset of war, Iraqi committed 18,000 ground troops and several hundred tanks with an addition of MIGs to be stationed at Golan Heights. Apart from being the financial underwriters of the war by Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, they supplied approximately another 3,000 troops with Libya's support of Mirage fighter jets violating the arms transfer ban by Paris.

Where else some north African nations follow suit with Algeria supplying 3 squadrons of fighters and bombers, an armored brigade and 150 tanks and 1,000 to 2,000 Tunisian soldiers was mobilised to the Nile Delta with another 3,500 Sudanese troops located at Southern Egypt. Last but not least, Lebanese radar units were allowed to be used by Syrian air forces to monitor air control with repeated usage of Lebanon territory by Palestinians to shell Israeli civilian settlements. Included with the majority of forces was the added support by an additional 100 Jordanian tanks and 3 artillery batteries.

With the amassed Arab and north African armies, the Egyptian forces invaded Israel trampling the Golan Heights and beyond in the first few days triumphantly only to be met by stiff counter attacks by the Israelite army though smaller in numbers yet due to the ferocious fighting instincts was able to put up strong resistance and even pressed ahead.

A tribute to Moshe Dayan one of the most dangerous Defense Minister Israel ever had with the quote 'Nothing excites me more than war' during his mid years as Defense Minister. Golda Meir who served as Foreign Minister from 1956 to 1965 was often described as the Iron Lady by PM David Ben Gurion with her no nonsense approach who was able to pull together the majority of the Knesset by her strict womanliness. Though she temporarily retired in 1965 as a result of exhaustion and illness, she was soon called back to active duty and served as Secretary General of a newly created Alignment only to retire on 1st of August 1968.

It was 26th February 1969 that acting Prime Minister Levi Eshkol suffered a fatal heart attack that forced Golda Meir to come out of retirement by the Knesset after a number of negotiations on 17th March 1969 to take the reins of the nation.

Prime Minister Golda Meir (March 1969 to April 1974) served in office for 5 terms that was constantly marred by Israeli-Arab confrontations which extended to the hostile provocations of Egypt with installations of a large number of missiles at the Suez Canal by Egyptian President Gamel Abel Nasser that provoked the trespassing of UN Security Resolution 242 which led PM Golda Meir to officially invoke the 'asymmetrical response' policy on 8th April 1970 that enabled Israeli military respond to the conflict which led to the 1970 War of Attrition.

In actual historical achives, the War of Attrition started right after the 1967 Israeli-Arab conflict due to the fact that the beaten Arab states has never accepted defeat in any form of a truce even though the agreement was signed between the warring countries. The excuse of gaining back the Sinai was only an excuse to continue terrorist activities. The reason why War of Attrition was officially declared was because of the hostile missile installations SAM 2 & 3 ground to air missile, it is not immediately known if ground to ground missiles were deployed within the demilitarized zone in Suez Canal which would cause an international threat to shipping lines, by Egyptian forces that would prove to be difficult for European and Western countries to carry on trading for the vital commodity of oil in Arab once the Egyptians have taken control of the Suez Canal. Thereby enabling Arabs to exert pressure on western countries to bow down to their demands.

The toll of the War of Attrition which lasted 3 years was quite heavy on Israel's military force with 1,242 dead of which are the most well trained soldiers in fighting warfare and another 100 civilian casualties and with an additional 2,000 soldiers and 700 civilians wounded. The death toll was considerably heavy seeing that the nation of Israel was small. Where else the Egyptian casualties was considerably higher even though they were better prepared militarily to an estimated numbering to 57,348 both wounded and killed in war as the findings of the Egyptian consensus was not published for political reasons.The reasonings that the defeat of the War of Attrition is due to the fact of more sophisticated weaponry by the opposing nation has no foothold seeing that Egypt was supplied with Soviet military supplies which was at that time comparable to American technology.

The War of Attrition officially came to an end in August 1970 with the signing of Rogers plan that was mediated by William Rogers, Secretary of State (America) which clearly delineated the Israeli borders and the territory of the Suez Canal.

At the official close of the chapter on the War of Attrition with the signing of the armistice of Rogers plan on August 6th 1970, Israel began to put more emphasis on the preparation of the Munich Olympics that will be attended by all nations globally..... Only to be marred by another international incident directed at Jewish nationals by terrorist.

This article does not serve to publicise any super film or superstar. What is more concerned is the facts that leads to the acknowledgement of the struggles of a nation always at war.

Before I would continue, I would like to clarify that the events in this film is pictorial of the actual real time events as shown in the film which is both historical and depiction of the actual terrifying scenes which when checked with documents prove to be authenticatedly correct. It must also be noted that the offer for assistance by Sayaret Matkel a military branch in Israel that specialises in anti-terrorist and has years of experience in this area was turned down by the Germans for fear of international drama and exposure to be dragged into terrorist activities.

It was times like this that forced the Knesset to hold emergency meetings with the direct response of the 1972 Munich Massacre that pressed PM Golda Meir into launching Operation Wrath of God a few months after the convening of the Munich Olympics by the Germans.

As PM Golda Meir has reiterated that 'Jewish blood is not cheap, It comes with a price, a very high price' at the launching of Operation Wrath of God at the Knesset with the selection of extremely highly trained espionage military arm of Mossad that was made unrelated to any country during the period of the operation. As the objective was transpired by the top echelon and passed to the operatives of Operation Munich, thus begins the haunting and tracking of the terrorist masterminds involved in the Munich Massacre with an objective to avoid as little civilian casualties as possible which is the opposite mentality of the militants that carried out the 1972 Munich Massacre to put the world in a very tense situation where terrorism will be the headlines in the international world.

The operatives involved in Operation Wrath of God that was hand picked by the top brass in Israel Defense Force that traced the left wing masterminds of the terrorist operation of Munich Massacre to Europe and back to Arab lands. On the 9th April 1973 an operation was launched to root out and vindicate the 3 mastermind terrorist of Munich Massacre was killed and a civilian who attempted to shield her husband in a volley of gun shots which was unintentionally, was killed instantly.

Though most of the objectives are met in Operation Wrath of God, it was considered a success in eliminating the master minds who had a record of terrorism and who was still serving in the country of their origin up until the Operation.
